Julia, from Julia Chang Photography, is a friend of mine, and you can imagine my absolute delight when she asked me to document an afternoon with her family. Her parents were in town for a visit, along with her sister and her family, and they spent the afternoon bowling, followed by deliciousness at Five Guys. It’s so important to document these visits; life is short, and honoring these moments with family is priceless.
This sweet baby boy was a matter of days old when his parents invited me into their home to make some pictures. I captured them loving, caring for, and really, getting to know this new little human. These early days pass by so quickly; in the exhaustion of new parenthood, it’s so easy to forget the tiniest details, like those sweet little toes…
When family came to visit from Korea, this mom didn’t think twice about bringing me along to make pictures for them. When adult siblings and cousins see one another once a year, you do everything you can to make sure those memories are preserved.
Baking muffins together is the stuff childhood dreams are made of. I just loved how gentle and patient this mum was with her daughters, especially during muffin-making. But if you look carefully at these photos, you’ll see a glance that every mom is a master of! Taking the time to document everyday moments like these is something we will never regret.
Life is so unpredictable. We never know when something might come along and pull the rug out from under us. Which is why it’s so important to honor and acknowledge the beauty in our everyday moments. It was the diagnosis of an illness and the complete recovery from it that made this family realize how precious and amazing the everyday really is.
I loved spending a Saturday morning with this family. The smell of coffee percolating, the sound of eggs and roti gently sizzling on the stovetop… It reminded me of quiet mornings at home with my own family. I’m so inspired by the way this family values togetherness and the importance of honoring their heritage.
When my friend Kristen of Kristen Maus Photography asked me to document her daughter’s first few hours in the hospital, I couldn’t contain my excitement! This was my first Fresh 48 session, which made it an especially sweet project for me. Kudos to Kristen and her husband for making this time in their family’s journey a priority.
I’d be lying if I said that breakfast wasn’t among my absolute favorite things to photograph. There’s just something so comforting, so sweet, so pure about little ones still in their pajamas, working tirelessly to help in the quest to get some nurturing food into their bellies. This family’s breakfast session did not disappoint.
Some families start off as clients and become friends, and some families start off as friends and become clients. I’ve known this family since our big ones were babies, and I am thoroughly honored every single time they ask me to hold up a camera to them. It’s so special to watch families grow and change over the years. It gives me a chance to get to know everyone, and getting to know everyone allows me a special pass to witness some really special moments.
I’ve been making pictures for this beautiful family since the little one was really much littler. This is a family that wants the most authentic pictures possible. No pretenses, no false faces. They want their own beautiful truth. And these sweet girls give it to me every time, without fail.
Photo sessions make nice gifts. This family was gifted a session because they lifted another family’s burden, and their generosity and kindness were evident to me from the moment I walked into their house. They value honesty and integrity, but it comes with a healthy dose of humor and lots of belly laughs. And really, what family couldn’t benefit from a little more of that?
My heart does somersaults when new parents ask me to photograph their baby’s first bath. My children are a little older, and I’ve long forgotten how during those first few weeks, we treat our babies as if they’re made out of porcelain. Soon enough, they will be “roughing and tumbling” and giving us heart palpitations.
